German Sounds

Some names of relatives look similar to English, but we can’t pronounce them that way! In most regions in Germany, these words are actually said with French pronunciation!

CousinCousin
(nasal, similar to “an”)
CousineCousine
(similar to “magazine”, plus “uh”)

The syllable ver comes up often in German! It sounds like the word fair in English. Let’s practice this in the following words:

verheiratetverheiratet
Verwandte Verwandte

Wedding bells!

Die Hochzeit in the German‑speaking realm is typically small. Marriages often happen first in a courthouse. Then, sometimes, a separate ceremony is held in a church.

Unsere Hochzeit ist nicht teuer.
Our wedding is not expensive.

The night before the wedding, guests bring dishes and break them on the ground and the couple must clean them up together. At the celebration, some traditions include the couple sawing through a log together or cutting a heart out of a bedsheet and then walking through it!
